Do you ever think about the path untaken? How different your life could be if you focused solely on your career, or focused more on having a family? As a stay at home mom these questions cross my mind often and I try not to dwell on the what-if’s.

Last weekend my husband and I received tickets from Playtime! to see Gina Gionfriddo’s  play Rapture, Blister, Burn at Playwrights Horizons and these same questions were brought up by the main characters Catherine (Amy Brenneman) and Gwen (Kellie Overbey). After grad school Catherine chose a career and became a very successful academic and author in New York City where Gwen started a family in the suburbs with Catherine’s former love interest Don (Lee Tergesen). The discussions between these characters including Catherine’s mom Alice (Beth Dixen) and the babysitter Avery (Virginia Kull) get very deep and touch on both sides of the feminist Women’s Movement.

In the play Rapture, Blister, Burn multiple references are made towards Phyllis Schlafly (known for her opposition to modern feminism and for her push against the Equal Rights Amendment) and Betty Friedan (A leading figure in the Women’s Movement, for American feminism). The three generations of woman represented in this show have back and forth discussions between which side of the Women’s Movement they side with and then flip-flop their ideas when things might not be going the way they had paned or expected. In the end the biggest takeaway I got from the show is I can’t have it all without sacrifice at that is OK.

This show and many others at Playwrights Horizons, Signature Theatre and Westside Theatre offer Playtime! a not-for-profit program designed to help parents get back to going to the theatre by offering creative, interactive and professional childcare at the theater while you get to enjoy a show (child free)! Here is a calendar list of shows including Rapture, Blister, Burn that participate in Playtime!
